Regular visits to the sauna offer more than just rest and relaxation. The sauna is also very beneficial to your health. Below are a number of reasons to regularly visit the sauna.
Immunity
Regular visits to the sauna significantly boost your immunity. This makes you less susceptible to illness. Your body has to work hard while in the sauna. The conditions in the sauna create an artificial fever. This causes you to sweat, removing waste products from your body. The trick is to then cool your body down properly to activate circulation. Your lungs have to dry out, allowing you to breathe better.
Respiratory issues
Visiting the sauna has other benefits as well. People with respiratory problems, such as asthma or bronchial problems, can benefit greatly from the sauna. The mucus membranes experience up to seven times more circulation than normally. As a result the hot sauna air that is inhaled is cooled off to a bearable temperature before it ultimately reaches the lungs. This relaxes the overheated respiratory muscles. The bronchi expand and you will notice you can exhale freely again. Frequent visits to the sauna will gradually improve respiratory problems. This is due to the fact that the adrenal glands are activated and release more of the body’s own cortisone.
Rheumatic ailments
Many people with rheumatic problems experience benefits from visiting the sauna. Pain and stiffness are demonstrably reduced. The use of the infra-red sauna in particular has a positive effect. Acute inflammation is a contraindication however.
